טעמא דכתבה ליה אבל על פה לא אמאי דבר שבממון הוא ושמעינן ליה לר' יהודה דאמר דבר שבממון תנאו קיים

The reason [that this is allowed] is because she wrote him [a receipt]. If, however, [she forgave a portion of her ketubah] by word of mouth [he would] not [have been exempt]. But why? This is a monetary matter, and we have heard R. Judah say that in a monetary matter one’s stipulation is valid.
